Volunteering:

  • Get in touch with film festivals or writers festivals to ask if they need volunteers - often you get free tickets to the festival in exchange for your time, and you can meet lots of people working in the industry.

  • Contact arts organisations, independent theatres or galleries to see if they run volunteer programs, in order to gain some experience.

Enter competitions:

Join networks and supportive industry organisations - these are often aimed at professionals, but sometimes have memberships or opportunities for emerging creatives:

Get involved in making and doing things:

  • Sticky Institute - a zine shop in Melbourne, they run drop in sessions where you learn how to make a zine.

  • Our Local Council runs workshops and activities - try something new, see if you like it.

  • Get a couple of your friends together and START MAKING SOMETHING - this is the best way to learn, and it’s the way I continue to forge my career.

If you want to be a writer, write. If you want to be a filmmaker, make a film. If you want to be a podcaster, make a podcast.

If you want to have a creative career, start creating.
